First year Advanced Trainees in Clinical Genetics to follow a new curriculum in 2027
We are delighted to confirm that the RACP College Education Committee (CEC) has approved a new curriculum for Advanced Training in Clinical Genetics, which will be implemented for incoming first year trainees in 2027.
This decision comes after a considerable investment of time and effort to develop the curriculum by both the Training Program Committee (TPC) in Clinical Genetics and the Clinical Genetics Curriculum Review Group.
We are very grateful to the members who undertook this work for their commitment to the on-going improvement of clinical genetics training in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. We would also like to acknowledge the Human Genetics Society of Australasia, the Australasian Society of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, and everyone who engaged in dialogue regarding this new curriculum, including draft reviews and providing feedback.
New curriculum
The new curriculum standards and Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) requirements can be reviewed via RACP Online Learning. The use of new learning and assessment tools will be supported by the new Training Management Platform (TMP).
Key changes from the existing Physician Readiness for Expert Practice (PREP) program to new curriculum include:
- updated professional experience (time-based) requirements for metabolic medicine
- new work-based learning and assessment tools that replace the PREP assessments
- adoption of new RACP learning courses that will be common across all Advanced Training programs
- all core training rotations require at least two supervisors, one of which must have FRACP in clinical genetics
- changes to supervision requirements for non-core training
- number of required case reports reduced from 12 to 6 over the course of training (two case reports are required per phase)
- supervisor reports have been replaced with progress reports which are required (four per phase)
- the addition of a case mix logbook
- the removal of Paediatric Advanced Life Support course, noting this is now required during Basic Training
Existing trainees who began their training in 2026 or earlier
There is no change in requirements for current and continuing Advanced Trainees who are currently enrolled in the PREP program for Advanced Training in Clinical Genetics. Trainees who began clinical genetics training in 2026 or earlier will continue to follow the PREP program.
